My baby's published!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Lauren

Lauren's entries in the 3rd Grade Book of Poems published at her school.

Night Forest

by Lauren Dean

A tiger prowls in the depths

of the dark

night

forest.

His green eyes flashing

from side

to

side

silently stalking

his prey.

The tiger spots a

thrush

pounces

and kills it with one

swift

bite.

Delicious he thinks

as he

slinks away

into

darkness.

Wolves

by Lauren Dean

Cool Furry

Howling, sniffing, licking

noisy

all night

long

Ok, I Lied
Mood:  flirty

Well, technically, I didn't lie. I did have some things to post and I posted them. It's just that they ended up being from dates earlier than the last one.

So, I'm just going to go through my drafts. Clear them out. Post some here if I can make them make sense. How's that for desperate? Here we go:

Some of My Favorite Books
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross

The Kite Runner by Kalihd Hossenini

Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

"I Cannot Live Without Books"
Thomas Jefferson

Jan 12, 2006

I had heard about writing alphabetically and it sounded very interesting to me. I tried it and came up with two sentences.

Anita's Breakdown Creates Difficult Emotions For Geraldo. However, I Just Keep Laughing, Mimicking Nonchalance. Other People Quickly React, Showing They're Uncomfortable. Very Weird. Xavier? Yolanda? Zip.

Appalling, Boorish Creatures! Did Everyone Forget Geraldo Had Initially Justified "Keeping Locas Manacled"? Now Only Pathetic Quips Resound. Sigh. Tenseness Undulates Variably Within Xanadu. Yielding Zilch.

And with that I gave up.

Blame It On The Heinemann Gene
I only had the title, but this was going to be a post about how I'm a crier. You know, one of those people who gets teary at the drop of a hat. It used to happen only at sad moives, now it happens much more often. When Lauren does something awesome like play her violin in front of an audience, when I hear stories about kids in awful situations, when I talk with a co-worker going through hard times. It all sets me off. My mom was the same way as were her grandparents. Those Heinemanns...they passed along the crying gene.

If You Hear It Often Enough - It Becomes Reality

Kids are like that - if they hear something often enough, it becomes reality to them.

Lauren obviously heard about her hair often enough and one day, at a party with friends, someone said "Look at you!" to which Lauren replied, "I have beautiful hair".

Later that year we enrolled her in a preschool class. She had never been to daycare and was not used to us dropping her and leaving. We tried to bolster her confidence by telling her how well she was doing. Of course down the road she had to explain to relatives that "I'm getting really good at the drop off thing"

Warning! Disney Alert!

You have to wonder about kids shows and what they are teaching.

Take Charlie Brown - lots of name calling: stupid, idiot, blockhead. Lucy is forever hurting Charlie. And you can't help but feel sorry for poor Charlie in the Halloween special - while all the kids say things like "wow, I got a piece of gum" or "I got a candy bar", at every stop poor Charlie chimes in with "I got a lump of coal". And the cover actually reads "for kids of all ages".

Then there's Disney. I thought it was safe for Lauren to watch, but I'm beginning to wonder. Beauty and the Beast starts out so loud and vicious we won't let her watch it. Many Disney movies have a duo of characters, one wise leader and one stupid follower. Ice Age, Shrek, even Snow White. But I really should have seen it coming when, at 2-3 yrs old, while jumping on the bed, Lauren asked "Do I look like a jackass?" Thank you Pinocchio.

So there you have it. I've cleaned out the drafts and I'll be starting anew. Wish me luck, cuz, you know, I've got Facebook calling me at every turn.

Has It Really Been That Long?
Mood:  surprised
I can't believe it's been as long as it has. I will start writing again soon.  I even have a few things started. Maybe this weekend...

Back To Stale Air
Mood:  sad

Remember that breath of fresh air I mentioned? Well, that fresh air is about to go totally stale again at the end of the year. Not necessarily because it doesn't want to be around, but because it is slowly being choked off.

The day I found out, I had to literally fight tears. Not only will I miss the fresh air but I "fear" the staleness. I don't think I can take living in stale air again. Stale though it can be now, it wasn't always and unfortuantely the only remedy is changing the environment.  And I really dislike the process of finding a new environment.

Smarts
Mood:  irritated
Topic: Rants

Some of you may find this an elitist entry, but I'm going to post it anyway.

Have you ever wished you were surrounded by intelligent people? I do. Sometimes there are just way too many idiots around me. It may not even be that they are total morons. They could very well be average or even slightly above average IQ, but geez Louise...give me some people at my own level!

Usually it's their language that gets to me the most. How about  expanding your vocabulary a smidge? Include words other than the Seven Bad Words You Can't Say On TV when you describe your life! I'm not against a swear word or two, but every other word does not have to be one of the seven! And for crying out loud - learn to use the word "have" instead of "got"!

A Breath of Fresh Air
Mood:  happy
And then someone steps into your life to wisk the stale air of lost respect away. This person is intelligent, engaging, witty. We hit it off from the start. Ahhhh, there's nothing like a breath of fresh air to liven up a place!

Lost Respect
Mood:  sad
Have you ever know someone whom you've held in high regard for many years who ends up falling from your graces? I've known this person for going on 12 years now and for the last 7 my respect for him/her has steadily declined. Usually this type of thing happens because of one event - and there was such an event - but I'm not sure that event was entirely the reason. I suppose it started things off and they have just simply gone from bad to worse. Most of the time I can ignore the person because he/she is not around, but other times, when he/she is around I can hardly listen to him/her speak. Some days I can hardly stand to be in the same room and it takes all I have. Not much I can do, but it's really quite sad.

My Fifteen Minutes Of Fame
Mood:  cheeky
Topic: Yours Truly

I've finally got mine...15 minutes of fame that is.

It was at a Stones concert, I was 15 years old, and chosen to meet Mick Jagger after the show. I was so excited yet very nervous. Mick came into the room and then I noticed. He was absolutely trashed. I don't mean just drunk, but really, really flying. He could barely stand and went stumbling around the room. His handler brought him over, he mumbled hello, and then gave me his manager's address so I could write to him through his manager. Then he left. Some time passed when he came back into the room and although he was not normal, he was in a much more subdued state. He sat at the bar and called me over. I went and stood next to him at the bar and managed to spit out that my favorite song was Brown Sugar. Then I corrected my answer to be Honky Tonk Women. He smiled and gave me his address so I could write to him, then disappeared.  Some time passed again, but not as much as the last time he left the room, when he returned yet again and was completely trashed again. This time we talked a bit longer - about traveling. He was impressed that I had traveled to as many places as I had. We became quite comfortable with each other, chatted away and he gave me his address so I could write to him, but this time he gave me his "real" name so that he would be sure to receive my letters. Then he left.

So that's my fifteen minutes of fame with Mick Jagger. It happened last night as I was sleeping.

Excuse Me!
Mood:  irritated
Topic: Rants

Whenever I go to a work-related class, I always introduce myself as a developer which is what I do 85% of the time. The other 15% is database work. So when I attended the SQL Administration class last week, I made my introduction and the instructor, after saying he was glad I had “admitted” I was a developer, proceeded to insult me at least three times in the first hour alone, each time being sure to glare at me over his glasses. He claimed programmers put bad code out on the server which bogs down the server and then who has to clean it up? The DBA…glare. He claimed programmers don’t know database design and should take that class…glare. He claimed some programmers use tempdb over and over again…glare. After 45 minutes I was ready to knock his glasses off his face. Where do these people get off?! I certainly made my feelings known in the course evaluation, but I’m sure I’ll never hear anything back.

Cool Stuff
Mood:  silly
Topic: Lauren

My car has been out of commission for a while and I have been using my MIL’s 1995 Saturn for a week while she was out of town. Riding in the car the other day with Lauren, she piped up from the back seat, “Hey what’s this cool cranky thingy?” Get this!...She meant the window crank! Apparently, that cool cranky thing has followed albums, 8-tracks, and dial telephones into the abyss. Smile
